Fall 2019 English II Pre-AP-1st Period Assignments

Vocabulary Test on Chapter 7-11 will be given on Tuesday; please bring your vocabulary cards to class.

Acts I - V of King Lear are due on Wednesday. The annotation and summary of that novel will be worth an assessment grade. Please be sure to have those completed when you walk into class on Wednesday.

Complete all four pages for Chapter 8 Vocabulary-in-Context. You also need to complete vocabulary cards for Chapter 8 by tomorrow.

Complete the reading of Act II in King Lear. Be sure to have a one-sentence summary at the top of each page and a minimum of 3 sentence-long annotations.

If you are absent on Tuesday, you should have received the vocabulary worksheets for Chapter 9. Those will be due on Wednesday, along with the vocabulary cards for Chapter 9.

Tuesday's homework will be for you to complete Act III of King Lear. Students will be allowed to read Act III in class tomorrow, continuing that reading at home Tuesday night.

*****Do not forget to bring index cards to class for the rest of the week. You will need 40 index cards for the next four chapters of vocabulary.

You will be given 45 minutes to complete the assignment. You must read the story and begin writing the narrative.

Complete the following before class tomorrow: The Self-Reflection Rubric on The Metamorphosis, the Fishbowl Discussion/Seminar Rubric, and the paragraph in Google Classroom that was posted immediately before this one. These together with your participation points will be an assessment grade; therefore, be sure that these are answered fully and in grammatically correct sentences.

I am attaching a copy of the answers given in class today so that you can use them for your reflections. You really had great insights on the novel today! I knew you all really liked the book despite all of your remarks stating otherwise.

For tomorrow's Socratic Seminar, complete the attached questions as directed on the attached documents. Bring your novellas to school tomorrow. Also, please remember to bring your Self-Reflection Rubric and Socratic Rubric to class--I gave you these handouts in class today.

Please type your essay on the attached document. You must type your essay in Google Docs and then copy and paste into Paperrater.com before the end of the period. You will be expected to e-submit the essay to the code provided in class.

Please write your name and questions on The Metamorphosis on the attached document. You need to choose 2 questions that you would like to discuss in the Socratic Seminar by marking an X under the Yes column. This is due by Sunday at 7:00 P.M.

Because this is a shared document, I will be looking to see if anyone erases or otherwise edits another student's questions and/or name.

Complete the annotation of "The Raven." You may use the TPCASTT graphic organizer to organize your thoughts. Remember, I want you to really think about the effect of the words and organization of the poem. Please do not spend over 30 - 45 minutes on this assignment. We will discuss this in class tomorrow.

The annotations and summaries for the remainder of The Metamorphosis are due on Friday--no extensions allowed since it was supposed to be due today.

Please be prepared for a test on A Doll's House on Monday. Be sure to bring your novel.

Read, annotate, and summarize the remaining pages of The Metamorphosis. The entire novella is due on Wednesday.

Read and annotate (you should know what that means) pages 21-37 of The Metamorphosis. Review the questions and answers to A Doll's House so we can complete the Socratic Seminar on Friday.

Create 3 high-level questions for A Doll's House. Remember, the questions must require textual evidence to answer, and they should be high-level, critical thinking questions. In other words, everyone may have a different answer because the question invites discussion (these are usually inference type questions). You should have a short answer to each question as well as possible page numbers on which you can find the answers.

Please bring your novels to school tomorrow.

We will spend 25 minutes reviewing your essays on Tuesday. There are too many errors for me to grade them as of now.

Revise your essay outline on "Time to Assert American Values," "Rough Justice," and your own article so that you can complete typing the essay in class on Friday.

The annotations and summaries for the novel A Doll's House are due on Monday; be prepared for a quiz on Act III. The quiz will be closed book.

Your newspaper article analysis is due next Wednesday. I have created a new assignment in Google Classroom on which you are to submit your analysis.

Continue reading and annotating A Doll's House.  Chapter 3 and the entire novel is due Friday. 

You will have a quiz on Vocabulary Chapter 7 on Thursday. Begin studying now.

If you have not done so, please look at your article and the other two Springboard articles on Michael Fay that we discussed in class to determine what quotes you will use tomorrow in your outline. You will be allowed to work on the outline and begin your essay in class on Wednesday. The final essay is due on Thursday, so please be prepared with your information.

Do not work on the outline at home. This is an in-class assignment.

Please use the outline to complete your essay outline. You may stray from it after you have completed all the pieces and parts.

Read and annotate pages 50 - 54 in A Doll's House. I am no longer telling you the number of annotations and summary sentences.

Bonus: Bring a box of Kleenex to class; limit of one box per students.

Also, you may revise the group essay tonight or do it in class tomorrow. I will be looking at them tonight. Please reference your previous essay when making corrections.

You will have a test on Unit 1, Chapters 1-5 on Monday. Please study your vocabulary words in preparation for this test.

Read and annotate pages 5-15 in A Doll's House. Please know you need at least 4 annotations per note page. When you get to page 11, you will begin writing one-sentence summaries at the top of the page; you will also need at least 3 annotations on each page. You MUST write the summaries at the top of the novel and not on sticky notes. If you need to write sticky notes for the side annotations, you may do so.

Please keep in mind that we will have several pages of reading and annotating assigned each night. With that in mind, you may want to read ahead and complete more of the reading if you have sports, clubs, or jobs after school during the week.

We will complete the gerund worksheet in class. Many students seem to be having problems with labeling the type of gerund. Just finish the assignment below for Friday.

You must complete the Newspaper Article Review #1 before tomorrow's class. Be sure you have only 200-250 words in the paragraph. This number does not include the heading, title, bibliography or connotative words sections. Please write your total word count below your paragraph.

Also, 1st period students need to have 3 connotative words listed and analyzed below the paragraph. Second and 3rd period must have 2 connotative words listed and analyzed below the paragraph. It is required!!!

The annotated article taped to a sheet of paper, the SOAPstone Graphic Organizer, and the typed final copy of the paragraph (heading, title, bibliography, paragraph, and connotative words) must be ready to print upon entering the class.

Please underline the vocabulary words and the prepositional phrases and participial phrases.

It must be double-spaced. Please proofread.

Answer questions 1-7 on "An Indian Father's Plea," pages 100-101 in your SpringBoard Workbook. You mus thave a minimum of two sentences per question to receive any credit. Please be sure to use a parenthetical citation after each answer--these will be a paraphrase.

Work on your newspaper articles that are due Friday. You may handwrite your SOAPStone graphic organizer and your annotations; however, the paragraph and Works Cited entry MUST be typed. We will print copies in class on Friday.

Remember, the last assessment of the grading period will be given next Monday. Please be sure to study all 50 vocabulary words.

You really had no homework over the weekend. You have a reading comprehension test tomorrow that covers everything we have discussed this semester. Your test will also cover participial phrases, but you will be allowed to use your worksheets--if you have them. Still, you may want to review these. It should be fun. See you tomorrow.

Complete your section of the "Close Reading Graphic Organizer for 'Rice and Rose Bowl Blues;'" make corrections to your written response on "The Masque of the Red Death" by Wednesday. If you have received a grade on your essay on "There Will Come Soft Rains" and "By the Waters of Babylon," please make the suggested corrections.

Complete the annotation of the poem "Rice and Rose Bowl Blues." By the way, I am assuming all of you will read and annotate the title. Seriously, "Rose Bowl Blues" must be an allusion, correct? I have also made corrections to your "Masque of the Red Death" stories--please make those corrections. I am also making corrections to essays; as you see the request for corrections, please make those.

Complete your section of the graphic organizer on "Two Kinds" in Google Classroom. Please write your name in the box so that I can grade you on your section tomorrow.

Use this as a reference when analyzing poetry.

Answer questions 1-9 on "Two Kinds," pages 30 and 31. These questions need to be answered in complete sentences. Please cite evidence using correctly written parenthetical citations at the end of each answer.

Read and annotate pages 24-26 of "Two Kinds" in your SpringBoard Workbooks. Also, be sure to complete 7-10 of the Combining Sentences Using Participles worksheet. Please underline the participial phrases in your revised sentences. I will be checking all of "Two Kinds" assigned thus far tomorrow morning.

Complete the introduction through the 2nd body on the attached document.

Complete the introduction through the 2nd body on the previous worksheet. This copy has the information we completed in class. Complete the introduction, 1st body paragraph, and 2nd body paragraph on the typing worksheet posted before this one.

You may access this form, but you MUST handwrite your sentences on the written form.

Handwrite the introduction for the essay on "By the Waters of Babylon" and "There Will Come Soft Rains" on the outline given to you in class today. Then write the direct quotes you want to use in for the first body paragraph on the outline as well. Do not type the assignment.

Read, annotate, and answer questions for pages 132 - 140 in "There Will Come Soft Rains." Remember: Questions must be answered in complete sentences and parenthetically cited (Bradbury 132). This assignment is a great connection to "Embroidery." Enjoy!

For those of you who were absent, I have attached a PDF to this assignment. I know it is late, but I still wanted to make sure all of you have access.

Read and annotate "Ethnic Hash." Please annotate thoroughly (more than ten annotations). Please concentrate on the purpose of imagery and literary devices used in the reading passage (include similes, metaphors, etc.). Answer questions 10 - 12 in complete sentences on page 15. Cite textual evidence in the questions and parenthetically cite each question (Williams 14).

Complete annotations for "What Is Cultural Identity?" Answer questions 1-9 on pages 11 and 12. Use complete sentences and parenthetically cite evidence (Trumbull and Pacheco 9). You do not have to complete number 6 until tomorrow.

Quiz on Chapter 2 Vocabulary will be on Wednesday.

Complete the entire packet on "By the Waters of Babylon." That means all pages with text, graphic organizers, and test-prep questions.

Complete the Using Prepositional Phrase worksheet.

Complete Vocabulary Cards for Chapter 2 -- Words in Context. Be sure to have your three research articles for EBSCO Research Assignment on "Masque of the Red Death." I would recommend writing a brief outline of what you will write tomorrow in class.

Class fee is $10.00.

Please try to have all supplies by next Wednesday.

Find two articles in EBSCO on the symbolic significance of the seven rooms in "Masque of the Red Death."  Please look at the instructions to access EBSCO on the form in Google Classroom. You may print out the articles or save them to your school Google Drive -- they must be in a location that you can access at school on Monday.  If you prefer, you may copy them to the assignment form in Google Classroom.  However, please do not write the paragraph.  We will work on this in class on Monday.  


Remember:  You need to bring your Ishmael novels to school on Monday.

P.S.  You may want to find an article on the symbolic significance of colors--that will help you understand why Edgar Allan Poe used those specific colors.

Read and annotate pages 451 - 452 and pages 455 - 457 in your reading packet on "The Masque of the Red Death" and from "Danse Macabre" as well as the movie poster. You must thoroughly annotate each page. Answer the questions on the side of the texts in complete sentences; be sure to use parenthetical citations.

We will discuss which questions on pages 453 - 454 and 458 need to be answered in class tomorrow.

Please be sure to bring your Ishmael novels tomorrow. We will complete a brief vocabulary activity tomorrow and follow that with the Socratic Seminar. Those of you who did not turn in answered questions, please try to have them completed for tomorrow so you can participate in the activity.

The test on the novel will be Friday.
