Fall 2019 English II 2nd Period-2nd Period Assignments

Complete the self-reflection rubric on The Metamorphosis before class on Tuesday; be sure each question is answered with several sentences. This is part of an assessment; please be sure to treat it as such. Also, bring vocabulary cards for Chapters 7-11 to class tomorrow; you have a test on vocabulary in class. Also, be sure to bring your novels to class.

Please follow the instructions on the attached worksheet. This is due at the end of the period.

Complete all four pages for Chapter 8 Vocabulary-in-Context. You also need to complete vocabulary cards for Chapter 8 by tomorrow.

Complete the reading of "One Word of Truth Outweighs the World," on pages 203-204. Be sure to have a plethora of annotations since the article is short. You also are assigned questions 1-3 on the text. You should have two sentences for each question; cite evidence for each answer.

If you are absent on Tuesday, you should have received the vocabulary worksheets for Chapter 9. Those will be due on Wednesday, along with the vocabulary cards for Chapter 9.

Tuesday's homework will be for you to complete the reading and annotation of the next speech, "Hope, Despair, and Memory" by Elie Wiesel. You should read and annotate it thoroughly. Answer questions 4-6, citing textual evidence. Students will be allowed to read this speech in class tomorrow, continuing that reading at home Tuesday night.

*****Do not forget to bring index cards to class for the rest of the week. You will need 40 index cards for the next four chapters of vocabulary.

Read and annotate Chapter 2 of The Metamorphosis. It is due on Thursday.

Remember, Chapter 1 of The Metamorphosis is due on Monday. You need a summary sentence and 3 annotations on each page. Please keep in mind that Chapter 2 is due on Thursday, which will give you only 3 days after Monday to read an entire chapter; therefore, I encourage you to read and annotate more than Chapter 1 over the weekend.

If you are absent, I will send you a copy of the assignment on Monday. Please check Google Classroom on Monday for makeup work. It is the week before LEAP 2025, so we will be doing a lot of test preparation next week. Please try to be here.

Please type your essay on the attached document. You must type your essay in Google Docs and then copy and paste into Paperrater.com before the end of the period. You will be expected to e-submit the essay to the code provided in class.

Answer each question with a brief sentence and two or three page numbers in order to prepare for the Socratic Seminar.

For each of the two texts, "Time to Assert American Values" and "Rough Justice," write down two quotes that are fallacies. Please write the quote and the type of fallacy: hasty generalization, non-sequitur, either/or, or ad populum (Reference page 184).

Be sure that you have three quotes from each text on sticky-notes that have both the type of evidence (empirical, anecdotal, or logical) and the quote you plan on using from that text. If you have room, explain whether the evidence is weak or strong and why.

Complete pages 64-81 in A Doll's House for tomorrow. Tomorrow is the late date; it was supposed to be due today, so no late dates will be provided. Be prepared to take a short quiz on Acts II and III--without your novels.

Be sure to bring your novels, A Doll's House, and your newspapers to class tomorrow. You will also need your SpringBoard Workbooks.

Complete three quotes and their analyses on "Time to Assert American Values" and "Rough Justice." You will need these for the essay.

The annotations and summaries for the novel A Doll's House are due on Tuesday; be prepared for a quiz on Act II for Monday. The quiz will be closed book.

Your newspaper article analysis is due next Wednesday. I have created a new assignment in Google Classroom on which you are to submit your analysis.

Read and annotate pages 57-60 in A Doll's House for tomorrow. Continue reading and annotating A Doll's House.  Chapter 3 and the entire novel is due next Monday.  The date had to be changed because of the fall break.  I want to have the Socratic Seminar next Tuesday--and a test on Wednesday.

You will have a quiz on Vocabulary Chapter 7 on Wednesday. Please study your vocabulary cards.

Read and annotate pages 36-42 in A Doll's House. Remember, each page needs a summary sentence at the top of the page and three sentence-long annotations in the side margins or on sticky notes.

Bonus: Bring a box of Kleenex to class tomorrow; limit one box per student.

Read and annotate pages 16-24 for Friday. Each page must have a one sentence-summary AT THE TOP; each page must have at least 3 sentence-long annotations in the margins or on sticky notes. Please be sure to bring your novels to class on Friday as well as your study guide.

Read and annotate pages 12-16 in A Doll's House for Tuesday. You will need one summary sentence on the top of each page and 3 sentence-long annotations per page.

Also, you may revise the group essay tonight or do it in class tomorrow. I will be looking at them tonight. Please reference your previous essay when making corrections.

You will have a test on Unit 1, Chapters 1-5 on Monday. Please study your vocabulary words in preparation for this test. Also, since you will be allowed to use your vocabulary cards, please be sure to have them with you on Monday---and put them in alphabetical order.

Read and annotate pages 5-11 in A Doll's House. Please know you need at least 4 annotations per note page. When you get to page 11, you will begin writing one-sentence summaries at the top of the page; you will also need at least 3 annotations on each page. You MUST write the summaries at the top of the novel and not on sticky notes. If you need to write sticky notes for the side annotations, you may do so.

Please keep in mind that we will have several pages of reading and annotating assigned each night. With that in mind, you may want to read ahead and complete more of the reading if you have sports, clubs, or jobs after school during the week.

We will finish the gerund worksheet in class tomorrow. Many people seem to be having difficulty labeling the gerund phrases.

You must complete the Newspaper Article Review #1 before tomorrow's class. Be sure you have only 200-250 words in the paragraph. This number does not include the heading, title, bibliography or connotative words sections. Please write your total word count below your paragraph.

Also, 1st period students need to have 3 connotative words listed and analyzed below the paragraph. Second and 3rd period must have 2 connotative words listed and analyzed below the paragraph. It is required!!!

The annotated article taped to a sheet of paper, the SOAPstone Graphic Organizer, and the typed final copy of the paragraph (heading, title, bibliography, paragraph, and connotative words) must be ready to print upon entering the class.

Please underline the vocabulary words and the prepositional phrases and participial phrases.

It must be double-spaced. Please proofread.

Read and annotate pages 97-99 of "An Indian Father's Plea." You must have a minimum of four sentence-long annotations per page. Also, you need to highlight and label examples of evidence/support and counterclaims (concession and refutation). You should label a minimum of 4 examples of support and counterclaims. Also, if you find logical appeals (logos, ethos, and pathos), please label those as well.

Work on your newspaper articles that are due Friday. You may handwrite your SOAPStone graphic organizer and your annotations; however, the paragraph and Works Cited entry MUST be typed. We will print copies in class on Friday.

Remember, the last assessment of the grading period will be given next Monday. Please be sure to study all 50 vocabulary words.

Quiz on Vocabulary Chapter 5 tomorrow. You will not be allowed to use your cards, so please be sure to study your words. You may want to practice them on Quizlet.com.

Read page 94 so that you understand the meaning of the following terms: hook, claim, evidence and reasons, counterclaims (concessions and refutations), and Concluding Statement (Call to Action). Once you understand the terms, read and annotate pages 95-96 of "An Indian Father's Plea." You must label the hook, claim, and 4 or more reasons and evidence that support the claim/thesis. Also, be sure to label examples of ethos (ethical morals and credibility), pathos (appeals to emotion), and logos (appeal to logic and facts). There are no real counterclaims on these pages--and the call to action occurs at the end of the letter.

Work on your newspaper article assignment. It is due on Friday.

You really had no homework over the weekend. You have a reading comprehension test tomorrow that covers everything we have discussed this semester.

Complete the graphic organizer topic assigned to you by your group leader for "Two Kinds." It needs to be completed by tomorrow so that you can continue to work with your group. You need the three examples and the explanations to continue working with the group. Please be sure to have the assignment done before class on Tuesday.

Use this as a reference when analyzing poetry.

Read and annotate pages 24 and 25 of "Two Kinds" in your SpringBoard Workbooks. All annotations should be written in complete sentences. Please answer the Grammar & Usage question at the top of page 27 as well.

Read and annotate pages 24-25 of "Two Kinds" in your SpringBoard Workbooks. Also, be sure to complete 5-10 of the Combining Sentences Using Participles worksheet. Please underline the participial phrases in your revised sentences. I will be checking all of "Two Kinds" assigned thus far tomorrow morning.

Type your essay in 12 Times New Roman font and double-spaced on the attached document.

Handwrite the introduction for the essay on the short story "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury and the poem "There Will Come Soft Rains" and "There Will Come Soft Rains" on the outline given to you in class today. Do not type the assignment.

If you owe a $6.00 class fee, please have it for tomorrow.

Read, annotate, and answer questions for pages 132 - 140 in "There Will Come Soft Rains." Remember: Questions must be answered in complete sentences and parenthetically cited (Bradbury 132). This assignment is a great connection to "Embroidery." Enjoy!

Complete questions 10-12 on "Ethnic Hash," page 15 in your SpringBoard Workbooks. Remember, you must answer the questions in complete sentences to receive any credit. You must have a parenthetical citation at the end of all three answers (Williams 14).

Please have all of your grammar worksheets ready for the test tomorrow. Remember, you need to have your worksheets on prepositional phrases and appositive phrases ready.

Read and annotate "Ethnic Hash." Please annotate thoroughly ( eight or more annotations). Please concentrate on the purpose of imagery and literary devices used in the reading passage (include similes, metaphors, etc.). Do not just identify the literary device; explain the significance of the literary device to the passage.

Quiz on Chapter 2 Vocabulary in Context; bring your cards to class tomorrow.

Answer questions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 on "What Is Cultural Identity?" These must be answered in completed sentences and parenthetically cited (Trumbull and Pacheco 9).
