Spring 2019 English II 2nd Period-2nd Period Assignments

English II

 

Complete the reading of the packet distributed in class (from "Red Cranes" and from "The Firefly Hunt").  You must annotate pages 4 and 5 at least five times.  You must annotate page 6 three times.  Annotate page 10 five times and page 11 two times.  Then answer the questions by circling the correct answers.  On page 15, you MUST have a complete introduction written out.  You must also write two or three topic sentences (You may want to use a lot of the bulleted items as the basis for your topic sentences.).  

 

Last, please highlight the quotes that you plan to use.  

 

All of this is worth 50 points--so please do this work.  We will go over the answers in class tomorrow.   

 

Also, we will complete the next part of the Practice Test--it is much harder.  So, please be in class tomorrow.  

English II

 

Write and answer, citing evidence, three high-level questions on The Metamorphosis.  These will be used for a Socratic Seminar discussion.  Remember, you need to write questions that invite inference--not yes or no questions. 

 

You will be taking a reading comprehension test on Wednesday; please be present so you do not have to worry about taking a makeup test. 

 

For homework, you should look up an article from EBSCO (username:  ppsb; password: search) on Michael Fay's reaction to his punishment--after he was caned.  Print the article and annotate it for Wednesday.  If you cannot print the article, save it to Google Drive and write your comments in the margins.  You will be given time to explain his reaction as shown in the article.  

 

Read, annotate, and summarize pages 55-58 in The Metamorphosis.  

English II

 

Read, annotate, and summarize pages 42-45 of The Metamorphosis.  Each annotation and summary must be a complete sentence with correct punctuation and capitalization.

 

Complete the essay outline on "Time to Assert American Values" and "Rough Justice" for body paragraphs 2 and 3;  you should also completely write out the conclusion paragraph.   You MUST have this outline done before class so that you can finish the essay by the end of class.  You have had time to type for two days--without a finished outline, you will not finish.  

 

Complete Vocabulary Card for Chapter 8. 

 

Read, annotate, and summarize pages 37-41 in The Metamorphosis.  Each annotation and summary must be a complete, properly punctuated sentence.

Read, annotate, and summarize pages 18-25 in The Metamorphosis.  Please be sure adjust the page numbers from those shown in class.  Study vocabulary words for Chapter 8 because you have a quiz on the chapter Monday.  

 

Also, answer questions 1-5 on "Time to Assert American Values" and "Rough Justice."  The answers MUST be written in complete sentences and cited with parenthetical citations ("Time to Assert American Justice" 180) (Reyes 182). 

 

 

 

Read, annotate, and summarize each page of pages 13-17 in your novels, The Metamorphosis.   One summary sentence at the top of each page, and three sentence-long annotations in the margins for each page.

Complete the Self-Reflection Rubric on the Socratic Seminar we held in class today for Wednesday.  I have attached a copy of the class's responses to a Google Classroom Assignment.  Please use these comments to complete this rubric.  

 

You will have a test on A Doll's House on Wednesday; if your book is annotated, you will be allowed to use it for the test, so please be sure to have completed your annotations and your reading of the entire novel for Wednesday.  

 

 

 

Complete the vocabulary cards for Chapter 8.

 

Answer the student-generated questions on A Doll's House.  I have attached a copy to this assignment in case you needed a copy.  You must answer the question and write two or three-page numbers under the answer so that we can have a lively discussion tomorrow in class.

If you were present on Friday, you should have turned your questions for A Doll's House into me if you were in 1st period.  If you were absent, you need to have one high-level, critical thinking question for Monday.  We will get into groups to discuss these, and then conduct a Socratic Seminar.  

 

2nd Period:  Your assignment for Friday was to write one high-level question on A Doll's House.  We will get into groups to discuss these questions on Monday, but they need to be written out so that we can discuss them.  Please try to answer your questions with page numbers noted. 

 

PLEASE remember to bring your novels to class tomorrow.  You will need them as a reference.  

 

Tuesday we will probably continue the Socratic Seminar, with a test on the novel on Wednesday.  If you have not finished the novel, please do so for Monday. 

 

As noted, we discussed the above in class on Friday, but a few of you were absent.

Quiz on Vocabulary Chapter 4.  

 

Read pages 17-21 in "Everyday Use."  You must have 5 annotations per whole page and 3 annotations per half page.  You must answer the questions in the margins in complete sentences and cite parenthetically (Walker 20). 

 

Begin working on the Alice Walker Research Activity.  It will be due Monday.  You may handwrite the information or type it in Google Classroom.   Personally, I think it is easier to type, using a split-screen.   

 

Complete the 2nd body paragraph outline on the short story, "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury and the poem, "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Sara Teasdale. By tomorrow, all paragraphs should have their outlines completed.  You will complete the typing of the essay from the outlines in class on Tuesday; you will also type the conclusion paragraph and the Works Cited page.  Please have all of your paragraphs outlined before class tomorrow.

Complete the worksheet detailing the types of phrases and the vocabulary in your essay on "Two Kinds" and Kaffir Boy that is in Google Classroom.  You may open your essay, but if you type in the document, you will receive a zero.  When you open and look at your essay, you may copy and paste from the essay into the The Final Activity on "Two Kinds" and Kaffir Boy.   No new words should be typed into the actual essay.

Completely finish the introduction, the 1st body paragraph, and the 2nd body paragraph on the outline for the essay on "Two Kinds" and Kaffir Boy.  You will type those paragraphs tomorrow in class and complete the 3rd body and conclusion in class.   If you needed to see the essay portions that we completed together in class, I have attached a copy of that document to this assignment.  Please be sure that you have not typed in Google Classroom after class.  You can only type during English class.

1st Period:  You do not have to work on the introduction that I gave to you at the end of class; we will work on it in class tomorrow.  

 

1st and 2nd Period:  Make sure that you have completed the quotes for both "Two Kinds" and "Kaffir Boy."  You should also write down your chosen theme that is shown in both stories.

Mardi Gras Break assignment:  Read, annotate, and summarize pages 21-41 in A Doll's House.   

 

 

Complete the entire packet on "Two Kinds" and "Rice and Rose Bowl Blues."  Be sure to annotate each page, and cite evidence (Tan 223).  You must complete all graphic organizers and test practice.

 

On the chart assigned in class, write the line numbers of the 4 quotes from "Two Kinds" and Kaffir Boy that you would use to answer the writing prompt:  Analyze how two characters interact and develop over the course of a text to explain how conflict is used to dance the theme.  

 

After you write the line numbers on the chart, highlight the actual quote in the two texts.  

 

You will have a quiz on Vocabulary Chapter 2 on Friday.

Read and annotate pages 81-89 in The Language of Composition.

Read and annotate pages 21 and 22 of "Two Kinds" in your SpringBoard workbook.  You must concentrate on annotations of different conflicts in the story and what it reveals about the characters.  You need at least 5 annotations on page 22.  

 

You have an unseen reading test tomorrow; it will also incorporate the phrases and revisions that we have covered in class.  Please be sure to bring your grammar worksheets to class with you on Friday.  (The worksheets on prepositional phrases, infinitive phrases, and participial phrases. )  

 

Also, please try to think about the narrative that you will write.  You are not to type this at home.  After the test tomorrow, you will be allowed time to finish this narrative.

Voc.)

Read pages 146-151 of "The Interlopers."  For pages 148-151, you must read and annotate each pages.  You must have at least four annotations per page, and these must be complete sentences!  

 

When you get to questions, these must be answered with two or more complete sentences.  You also must parenthetically cite your answers (Saki 151).  

 

Then entire independent reading is due on Wednesday, so if you have time over the three-day weekend, you may want to read ahead so that you do not have a lot of the reading to complete Tuesday.  

 

 

English II

 

Complete the handout given to you in class on Academic versus Informal Voice.  On the T-Chart, you need to list at least 6 characteristics of Academic Voice and Informal Voice.  To determine the characteristics, review "What Is Cultural Identity?" for Academic Voice and "Ethnic Hash" for Informal Voice.  There should be major differences. 

 

2nd Period Only

 

On page 5, You need to list 10 elements that create your unique cultural identity.  They should be listed on a line that extends from the word "Culture."

Quiz tomorrow on Chapter 1 Vocabulary-in-Context.  Study your vocabulary words; please bring your vocabulary cards to class with you.  

 

Read and annotate "Ethnic Hash"  in your SpringBoard Workbook. You need at least 4 annotations per page.  Also, answer questions  10, 11, and 12 in complete sentences.  You must cite your answers (Williams 13).

You will finish the essay on "Lamb to the Slaughter" in class on Wednesday.  DO NOT work on this assignment at home; however, if you did not complete the reading and annotation of the short story, please do so tonight.  All pages of the short story are due tomorrow for a late grade.
