English 1 / English 1 Pre-Ap
English I is designed to improve students’ reading comprehension, literature analysis, writing, communication and critical thinking skills in relation to the Common Core State Standards.  For the 2017-2018 school year, English 1 and English 1 Pre-AP classes will be using the Spring Board English Language Arts Grade 9 text.

Reading assignments will include short stories, memoirs, narratives, articles, poems, plays and novels. Writing assignments will vary in both topic and length, incorporating research and passages from assigned texts. During the writing process, students will explore the ways that audience, purpose, and context shape oral communication, written communication, media and technology. In addition, students will engage in critical thinking as they answer close reading questions, engage in discussions, and give oral presentations. This class maintains a challenging atmosphere that will allow students to develop many skills necessary for success in high school, college, and the work force.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

ü  Analyze a text and determine multiple pieces of critical evidence for reading and writing purposes

ü  Distinguish between literal language and figurative language and determine why authors choose specific words to evoke a   particular meaning or tone

ü  Compose a clear and logical piece of writing that demonstrates their understanding of a specific writing style and apply revision strategies

ü  Use phrases, clauses, and parallel structure correctly in their writing

ü  Follow a standard format for citation to create a bibliography for sources that are paraphrased or quoted in writing

ü  Respond to diverse perspectives presented in a discussion and justify their own views based on evidence

ü  Summarize, paraphrase, and evaluate information from a text

ü  Compare the structures of multiple texts
