Fall 2017 English II (Period 2) Assignments

 

Complete the vocabulary word definitions for the final exam as well as the reading portion of the final study guide for Monday.  The definitions and annotations of the reading packet will be the only bonus points available for the final exam. 

 

Please remember to bring your SpringBoard workbooks to class on Monday.   I am required to pick up these books.  

 

 

Study your grammar worksheets because the different type of phrases and clauses will be on the test.  

 

Complete the reading, annotating, and answering of questions for Macbeth Acts I-V.  I will grade the annotations on Monday.  The questions for Acts IV and V will be graded by Sunday.  

 

Please remember to bring your SpringBoard workbooks to class on Monday.   I am required to pick up these books.  

 

You will have a test on The Metamorphosis Chapters 1-3 tomorrow, Thursday, December 14, 2017.  Please bring your copy of the novella to class tomorrow since you will be able to use it during the test. 

 

Your Socratic Seminar Reflection on The Metamorphosis is due Thursday as well.  The answers to the questions discussed in class have been attached to an assignment in Google Classroom so that you can better answers several of the questions on the Socratic Seminar Reflection Rubric.  

 

You have been given a copy of the terms needed for the final exam.  These are due on Monday and are worth bonus points on your final exam for the class.  

 

If you missed the Socratic Seminar, you are responsible for the replacement assignment given on Monday.  You must write a five-paragraph essay on The Metamorphosis.  You must write an essay on the following topic:  What is a possible theme shown in The Metamorphosis.  You must have an introduction (Hook, tag, thesis), two body paragraphs with a minimum of two cited quotes per paragraphs, and a conclusion.  This is due on Thursday, December 14, 2017, when you enter class.  You MUST turn it in before the end of class in order to receive any points for this assignment.  

 

 

You should have completed the questions on Acts I - IV on Macbeth in Google Classroom if possible.  You will be allowed to read Act V and complete the questions in class tomorrow, Thursday, December 14, 2017.

 

You were given a packet on Shakespearean Tragedy in class today.  You should briefly annotate while reading.  We will discuss this packet on Monday when I return to class.

Complete Unit 3 Practice PARCC Test pages 54-68.  You need to annotate and answer the multiple choice questions.  Practice timing yourself when completing this assignment.

 

English II  Pre-AP

 

 

You will have a research simulation task test tomorrow.  You may want to go to Google Classroom and look at your cultural identity essay to refresh your memory on the proper format for a research essay.  Remember:  this is a formal essay, which means you must use MLA format for a research paper.  

 

Complete the "Combining Sentences" worksheet that we started in class today.  Remember:  you must underline where you combined the sentences and label what you used to combine them:  conjunctive adverb, adverb clause, adjective clause, prepositional phrase, infinitive phrase, gerund phrase, and/or participial phrase.  

 

IF YOU COMPLETE THE ABOVE WORKSHEET, you may use it as a reference sheet during the test.  You may not use any other notes or other worksheets; all notes must be on this worksheet only. 

 

Create three high-order-thinking questions on The Metamorphosis.  You must have a short answer and at least two pages where you and others can find the answer to your question.  It will be worth 18 points (3 points per question and 3 points per answer).

Read the poem “Our Son Swears He Has 102 Gallons of Water in His Body” by Naomi Shihab Nye. In an essay, discuss the son’s relationship with his parents and explain what the last stanza reveals about this relationship. Be sure to include specific examples from the text to support your ideas. Remember that your response will be evaluated in two ways—on your understanding of the poem and on the quality of your writing.

Act I of A Doll's House is due on Friday.  You must have 3 annotations per page, and at least a one-sentence summary for each page of the novel.  The novel will be picked up and graded--please avoid "working together" with other students on this assignment.  It will be viewed as cheating.  This is meant to be an individual student assignment.

 

On Monday, you will have a Reading Comprehension test.  It will include reading passages and revision questions.  It is an assessment grade.

 

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, you will complete your "research simulation" task on Cultural Identity.  It will be worth 200 points.  It will include quotes from all the texts we have covered thus far this year.  Please be present for these days if possible.  This assignment MUST be completed in class. It is due at the end of class on Thursday.

Read "Hope, Despair, and Memory," pages 206-208; you must read, annotate, and answer questions 4-6.  Answers must be in complete sentences.  You MUST cite evidence (Wiesel 206).  You must have at least one annotation per two paragraphs to receive credit.  

 

You MUST write one high-level question on both "Hope, Despair, and Memory," and "One Word of Truth Outweighs the World."  

 

Be prepared for a reading comprehension test on Monday.  It will be taken in the computer lab.

You must read and annotate from Frida, a Biography of Frida Kahlo by Hayden Herrara on pages 33 and 34 in your SpringBoard workbook.  You must answer, incomplete sentences, questions 1-6 on page 35.  For questions 2, 3, 5, and 6,  be sure to cite evidence (Herrara 34).  

 

You must also read "Legal Alien" on page 40.  You must annotate this poem thoroughly:  rhyme scheme, juxtaposition (this word is in your glossary), imagery, internal rhyme, simile, metaphor, etc.  Explain why the device is used and what is being referenced.  Answer questions 11-14.  Be sure to cite evidence for questions 11, 12, 13, and 14 (Mora lines 10-14). 

 

After you have read the above, complete the quiz in SpringBoard online.  You have five questions to complete and submit before school tomorrow.

In preparation for Friday's discussion, please go to Google Classroom TONIGHT and create two higher-level questions on "Lamb to the Slaughter" and "The Interlopers."  Write them on the attached worksheet. This is due before class TOMORROW.  

 

Work on your research articles on the elements of a person's life that you believe are the most important in determining his or her cultural identity (music, technology, family, cell phones, ethnicity, religion, education, location, socio-economic status (rich, middle class, or poor), etc.)  

 

You must record your research in Google Classroom at the end of class tomorrow.
